तेन भग्नानरीन् सर्वान् मद्धग्नान् मन््यते जन: । तेन भग्नानि सैन्यानि पृष्ठतो<नुव्रजाम्पयहम्,उन्होंने ही मेरे समस्त शत्रुओंको मार भगाया है, किंतु लोग समझते हैं कि मैंने ही उन्हें मारा और भगाया है। शत्रुओंकी सारी सेनाएँ उन्हींके द्वारा नष्ट की गयीं, मैं तो केवल उनके पीछे-पीछे चलता था
tena bhagnānarīn sarvān maddhagnān manyate janaḥ | tena bhagnāni sainyāni pṛṣṭhato 'nuvrajāmy aham ||
به هُزم جميعُ محاربي العدو، ومع ذلك يظن الناس أنني أنا الذي صرعتهم. وبه تحطّمت جيوش الخصم؛ أما أنا فلم أكن إلا تابعًا يسير خلفه—تذكرةٌ بأن الشهرة كثيرًا ما تلتصق بالفاعل الظاهر، بينما تبقى العلة الحقيقية مستترة.
