Droṇa-parva 112: Karṇa–Bhīma Engagement and Duryodhana’s Protective Order
pāṇḍūnāṃ sarvasainyeṣu pāñcālānāṃ tathaiva ca | droṇaṃ sama dadṛśuḥ śūraṃ vinighnantaṃ varān varān ||

The verse highlights the harsh logic of dharma in war: a commander like Droṇa, acting within his pledged allegiance and martial role, seeks out the enemy’s foremost defenders to decide the battle—yet this very efficiency intensifies the moral weight and sorrow of the conflict.
Sañjaya reports that across the Pāṇḍava and Pāñcāla forces, observers witness Droṇa repeatedly cutting down the leading warriors, selecting and eliminating the most prominent champions one after another.
