satyavrataṁ ca samare purumitraṁ ca bhārata

Even in warfare, a person’s dharma is measured by inner commitments—truthfulness and fidelity to vows—along with the capacity to maintain goodwill and alliances without abandoning ethical restraint.
Sañjaya, reporting to Dhṛtarāṣṭra (addressed as ‘Bhārata’), characterizes a warrior/leader on the battlefield as ‘satyavrata’ (true to his vow) and ‘purumitra’ (friend of many), highlighting moral qualities amid the Kurukṣetra conflict.
