Bhīṣma-nipāta-saṃvāda — Sañjaya’s Report of Bhīṣma’s Fall (भीष्मनिपातसंवादः)
tasmān me sarvam ācakṣva yad vṛttaṃ tatra sañjaya | yad vṛttaṃ tatra saṅgrāme mandasyābuddhi-sambhavam apānītaṃ sunītaṃ yat tan mamācakṣva sañjaya ||
Dhṛtarāṣṭra frames the war-report as an ethical inquiry: he wants not only events but also how folly (abuddhi) leads to wrongdoing, and how right conduct (sunīti/dharma) is upheld or neglected. The verse highlights accountability—actions in war must be judged by moral discernment, not merely by victory or loss.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra requests Sañjaya to narrate the full course of what happened on the battlefield, specifically asking for details of what arose from Duryodhana’s misguided judgment and how matters of right and wrong played out during the conflict.
