Adhyāya 60: Dāna vs. Yajña—Royal Giving, Protection, and Karmic Share
tapasā prāpyate svargas tapasā prāpyate yaśaḥ | āyuḥ prakarṣo bhogāś ca labhyante tapasā vibho ||
The verse teaches that disciplined austerity (tapas) is a powerful means for attaining both otherworldly rewards (heaven) and worldly goods (fame, longevity, status, and enjoyments). Ethically, it elevates self-control and sustained effort as sources of legitimate prosperity and honor.
Vaiśampāyana, narrating the discourse of Anuśāsana Parva, states a general maxim praising tapas. The line functions as an instructional assertion within the broader didactic setting, emphasizing the fruits of austerity to the addressed listener (“vibho”).
