Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
tapasā hi sutaptena śakyo mokṣas tapobalāt | aho prabhāvo brahmarṣer cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ ||
Intense, well-practiced tapas (austerity and disciplined self-restraint) generates spiritual power capable of leading to mokṣa; the verse highlights tapas as an ethically grounded inner force rather than mere hardship.
Bhīṣma, instructing on dharma, points to the exemplary potency of the Brahmarṣi Cyavana, using him as evidence that authentic ascetic discipline can yield extraordinary spiritual results, even liberation.
