Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 85: Āṣṭaka–Yayāti संवादः

Merit-Exhaustion, Rebirth, and the Critique of Pride

kāvyasyōśanasaḥ śāpān na ca tṛpto ’smi yauvanae | pūro tvaṃ pratipadyasva pāpmānaṃ jarayā saha | kañcit kālaṃ careyaṃ vai viṣayān vayasā tava |

Educational Q&A

Unchecked desire does not naturally end with time; it can drive a person to shift burdens onto others. The verse foregrounds the ethical tension between personal craving (kāma) and responsibility for one’s own consequences (pāpmāna), highlighting that moral debt and suffering should not be transferred for the sake of pleasure.

The speaker (in the Yayāti episode) explains that due to Śukra’s curse he has become old, yet he still longs for youthful enjoyment. He asks Puru to accept his old age and moral taint, while he takes Puru’s youth to pursue sense-pleasures for a period.
