Yayāti–Devayānī Dialogue and Śukra’s Consent

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how spiritual authority and specialized knowledge (priesthood, mantra-vidyā) can decisively shape worldly outcomes: victory is pursued not only by force but by ritual expertise and esoteric learning. It also warns that rivalry among teachers and the instrumental use of sacred power can intensify conflict rather than resolve it.

The Devas appoint Bṛhaspati as their purohita to secure success in sacrificial and strategic matters, while the Daityas appoint Śukra. Their rivalry escalates the war: when the Devas kill Daityas in battle, Śukra revives them using Sañjīvanī, and the restored Daityas rejoin the fight.
