Public rites like a svayaṃvara draw not only royal contenders but also sages, indicating that political acts are observed within a moral and dharmic horizon; the presence of the Kurus with Karṇa also hints that social ceremonies can become arenas of rivalry and future conflict.
The narrator reports the gathering for a svayaṃvara: eminent sages arrive to witness it, and the Kaurava party—headed by Duryodhana and accompanied by Karṇa—also comes to the venue.
