The Niyoga Episode: Births of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Pāṇḍu, and Vidura
bhaviṣyati ca dharmātmā sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ | pituḥ priyahite yuktaḥ strībhogān varjayiṣyati ||
The verse praises an ideal of dharma grounded in learning and self-control: true excellence is shown by mastery of śāstra, commitment to a parent’s welfare, and restraint from sensual indulgence—especially when such restraint supports higher duties.
Vaiśampāyana is describing a person’s future qualities and conduct: he will be righteous and learned, act for his father’s dear and beneficial interests, and therefore abstain from pleasures associated with women.
