Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vainateya)

Ritual Type: Parvana

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: If āśauca arises at the time of scheduled parva śrāddha, perform immediately after āśauca ends.

Concept: When āśauca interrupts a scheduled pārvaṇa-śrāddha, perform it immediately after impurity ceases—dharma is preserved by correct sequencing rather than abandonment.

Vedantic Theme: Dharma as order (ṛta-like) in lived life; purity and timing as supports for sattva.

Application: If a death/birth impurity period arises near a scheduled śrāddha, pause; once the āśauca period ends, perform the rite without further delay.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Type: gṛha/śrāddha-maṇḍapa

FAQs

This verse clarifies that śrāddha should not be performed during aśauca; instead, it must be completed as soon as the impurity period ends, preserving both ritual purity and the duty toward the Pitṛs.

Indirectly: it emphasizes correct performance of ancestral rites (śrāddha), which the Garuda Purana links with supporting the departed and maintaining dharmic obligations, rather than detailing a specific afterlife route in this line.

If a scheduled śrāddha is interrupted by a family aśauca event, pause the rite and perform it promptly once the aśauca period concludes, following one’s tradition and qualified priestly guidance.
