Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.37: udakumbha-dāna as preta-mukti-prada (this teaching; further procedural verses implied)
This verse states that donating a water-pot, specifically dedicated to the departed (preta) and accompanied by food and drink, is a powerful rite that supports the preta’s release (mukti).
It reflects the Garuda Purana’s ritual logic that the preta’s post-death condition can be aided by intentional offerings (dāna) made in the preta’s name, helping the departed move toward freedom rather than remaining bound in a preta-state.
When performing śrāddha or memorial charity, dedicate the gift explicitly to the departed and include essentials like water and nourishment—symbolically and ritually expressing care, continuity, and dharmic responsibility.
