Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Avoid certain foods (madhu, māṃsa, svinna, etc.); the true guru is one who performs prescribed rites and then imparts the Veda.
Vedantic Theme: Śuddhācāra supports sattva and receptivity to śruti; guru as living conduit of śāstra through both conduct and instruction.
Application: Adopt dietary restraint aligned with one’s vows; choose teachers by integrity and lived practice, not charisma alone.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Type: gurukula/ritual setting
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.94.15-18 (brahmacarya regimen; eating rules; śrāddha exception)
This verse links restraint (avoiding honey, meat, and certain prepared foods) with ritual purity and readiness for sacred learning, presenting discipline as part of dharma.
A true guru is described as one who performs the required rites correctly and then transmits Vedic knowledge—practice and proper initiation/teaching go together.
Adopt moderation and purity in diet and conduct when undertaking religious observances, and seek teachers who embody practice, integrity, and authentic transmission of knowledge.
