Nirūpaṇa (Nāḍī–Svara-Nirūpaṇam): Breath Currents, Omens, and Action-Timing
ऊर्ध्वे ऽग्निरध आपश्च तिर्यक्संस्थः प्रभञ्जनः / मध्ये तु पृथिवी ज्ञेया नभः सर्वत्र सर्वदा
ūrdhve 'gniradha āpaśca tiryaksaṃsthaḥ prabhañjanaḥ / madhye tu pṛthivī jñeyā nabhaḥ sarvatra sarvadā
اعلم أن النار في الأعلى، والمياه في الأسفل، والريح تتحرك أفقياً؛ وفي الوسط تُعرَف الأرض، أما الفضاء (الأثير) فيسري في كل مكان وفي كل حين.
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)
Concept: Elemental orientation: fire above, water below, wind lateral, earth central, and ether pervading—an aid to understand structure and pervasion.
Vedantic Theme: Ākāśa as the most pervasive element hints at the subtler principle of consciousness pervading all; gradation from gross to subtle.
Application: Use as a meditation scaffold: feel stability (earth) at center, breath (wind) across, warmth (fire) rising, coolness (water) descending, and spacious awareness (ether) everywhere.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: cosmic/elemental schema
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: other pañca-bhūta and subtle-body passages (contextual parallel)
This verse summarizes an elemental map—fire, water, wind, earth, and all-pervading space—used in the Purana to frame how the cosmos (and the body) is constituted and governed by dharmic order.
Indirectly: by laying out the elemental structure of the universe, it supports later teachings that the subtle being moves through realms governed by these principles, while ākāśa (space) remains the ever-present medium.
Cultivate balance and reverence for the elements—live in a way that avoids harming fire, water, air, earth, and the shared space—supporting purity, restraint, and dharmic conduct.
