Lord Vishnu
Timing: Post-upanayana: 3 nights, then 10 nights; Kṣatriya: 12 days; Vaiśya: 10 days or 5 days (variant rule).
Concept: Aśauca/observance durations vary by samskara stage (post-upanayana) and by varna; dharma is graded by role and ritual status.
Vedantic Theme: Adhikara-bheda (difference in eligibility) within dharma; disciplined conduct as support for inner steadiness.
Application: Follow the observance duration prescribed for one’s traditional rule-set; where multiple rules exist (e.g., 10 or 5), adhere to the family/ācārya lineage standard consistently.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: contiguous aśauca rules by varna and circumstance (immediate context)
This verse preserves dharma-based standard durations for observances connected with the upanayana rite, showing how ritual discipline is calibrated by tradition and social duty.
Indirectly: by emphasizing correct samskara-linked observance, it supports a dharmic life that the Garuda Purana repeatedly connects with favorable post-death outcomes and avoidance of negative karmic consequences.
Follow a qualified tradition (ācārya and śāstra) for samskara-related observances and keep vows within prescribed limits, prioritizing sincerity, cleanliness, and ethical conduct.
