Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda)

Concept: Mantra and proper authorization are essential; action without mantra is aphala (fruitless) here and hereafter.

Vedantic Theme: Karma’s efficacy depends on saṅkalpa, śraddhā, and śāstra-vidhi; otherwise it becomes mere motion without spiritual linkage.

Application: Before performing rites (or any solemn commitment), seek proper guidance/consent and follow the prescribed form; avoid performative ritualism devoid of meaning and method.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Type: ritual-social space (sabha/gṛha/vedi)

Related Themes: Garuda Purana (Ācāra): emphasis on mantra, vidhi, and phala across iha/amutra (contextual)

FAQs

This verse states that a rite performed without the appropriate mantra is not result-producing—neither worldly benefits nor afterlife merit arise from it.

It underscores that post-death observances (and allied rites like offerings and homa) require proper authorization and mantra-recitation; otherwise, the intended spiritual benefit for the performer and the departed is not attained.

When performing any religious rite—especially śrāddha, homa, or offerings—follow prescribed procedure, seek proper guidance/permission where required, and ensure correct mantra usage rather than treating the act as mere formality.
