Ritual Type: Sapindana
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: agni-kārya and anna-dāna phase within sapīṇḍīkaraṇa
Concept: Offerings must be pure (pratiṣiddha-varjita) and properly dedicated; śrāddha extends beyond named pitṛ to those connected (‘anu-yāḥ’), sustaining ancestral continuum.
Vedantic Theme: Karma as ordered sacrifice; purity (śauca) and intention regulate fruit; continuity of saṃskāra across generations.
Application: Offer gandha etc. and make agni-offering for pitāmaha line; place remaining food into respective vessels; consecrate brāhmaṇa vessel; perform thumb placement and tila scattering; recite dedication specifying pure food with ghee/water/side dishes, excluding prohibited items, and include associated followers with svadhā.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Type: ritual space (agni-kunda)
Related Themes: GP śrāddha rules on tila usage, agni-kārya, and pratiṣiddha-bhojya exclusions; GP formulas extending offering to ‘ye cātra tvām anuyāś ca’ type recipients
This verse links tila-vikaraṇa (scattering sesame) and the formula ending in “svadhā” as key markers that the offering is specifically directed to the Pitṛs, sealing the intention and recipient of the śrāddha act.
It prescribes a sequence: offerings (including fragrance and fire-oblation) for the three ancestral generations, placing the remaining food into the appropriate pitṛ-vessels, completing vessel-consecrations up to the grandfather’s vessel, and then also consecrating the brāhmaṇa’s vessel.
Maintain ritual clarity: offer only permissible foods, keep a clear order of recipients (ancestors first, then brāhmaṇa), and perform the act with focused intention—treating the rite as disciplined dharma rather than a casual meal.
