Anupāna and the Doṣa-Effects of Foods, Waters, Dairy, Oils, and Preparations
अवृष्यः श्लेष्मपित्तघ्नो राजमाषो ऽनिलार्तिनुत् / कुलत्थः श्वासहिक्काहृत्कफगुल्मानिलापहः
avṛṣyaḥ śleṣmapittaghno rājamāṣo 'nilārtinut / kulatthaḥ śvāsahikkāhṛtkaphagulmānilāpahaḥ
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata/Pitta/Kapha
Concept: Right understanding of dravya-guṇa prevents misuse: not all beans are vṛṣya; some are targeted remedies for vāta-kapha ailments.
Vedantic Theme: Pramāṇa and viveka in daily conduct—discernment applied to bodily maintenance.
Application: Use rājamāṣa for kapha-pitta reduction and vāta-related discomfort without expecting vṛṣyatva; use kulattha for śvāsa/hikkā and kapha-gulma/vāta issues, prepared appropriately (soups/decoctions) to suit digestion.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.169 (continued pulse descriptions; therapeutic indications)
This verse highlights kulattha as a therapeutic pulse, especially for respiratory issues and vāta-kapha disturbances like hiccup, breathlessness, and gulma.
By emphasizing removal of vāta-related distress and kapha congestion, it supports a disciplined life where health is maintained for dharma and spiritual practice.
Kulattha is traditionally used when kapha congestion and vāta symptoms dominate; rājamāṣa is described as kapha-pitta pacifying but not a virility tonic.
