Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Kapha
Concept: Kapha aggravation comes from excess sweet/sour/salty, heavy, cold, unctuous foods; also new grain, slimy foods, and marsh/aquatic meats.
Vedantic Theme: Tamas-increasing diet fosters inertia; cultivating lightness (laghuta) supports clarity and steadiness for japa, puja, and study.
Application: Reduce heavy/cold/greasy foods; be cautious with very fresh new grain if it increases heaviness; limit slimy foods and heavy meats; favor warming spices and movement when kapha is high.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Type: ecological/food-source context
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.168.2–5 (dosha-specific causes)
This verse lists dietary causes that increase Kapha, showing the text’s practical health-ethics: controlling diet prevents doṣa imbalance and related suffering.
Indirectly: by teaching bodily discipline (āhāra-niyama), it supports a sāttvic life that reduces affliction and supports dharma, which in turn benefits one’s post-death trajectory described elsewhere in the Purana.
Reduce overeating and limit heavy, cold, oily, very sweet/sour/salty foods—especially slimy or marsh-meat type items—when Kapha symptoms are present.
