Vidradhi–Gulma Nidāna
Causes and Signs of Abscess and Abdominal Mass
ऊर्ध्वाधोमार्गमावृत्य वायुः शूलं करोति वै / स्पर्शोपलभ्यं गुल्मोत्थमुष्णं ग्रन्थिस्वरूपिणम्
ūrdhvādhomārgamāvṛtya vāyuḥ śūlaṃ karoti vai / sparśopalabhyaṃ gulmotthamuṣṇaṃ granthisvarūpiṇam
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda)
Dosha: Vata
Concept: Disease arises from srotas-āvaraṇa (channel obstruction) and misdirection of vāyu; correct understanding of pathways is key to remedy.
Vedantic Theme: Right knowledge (yathārtha-jñāna) of causes reduces suffering; discern the mechanism rather than reacting to symptoms alone.
Application: Address obstruction (āvaraṇa) and restore vāyu’s normal gati; seek evaluation for acute abdominal pain and palpable hot mass; avoid self-treatment in severe colic.
Primary Rasa: raudra
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.160.39–40: koṣṭha lodging of vāyu and gulma hardness; continuation of gulma nidāna
This verse highlights obstruction of bodily channels as a direct cause of severe pain and palpable masses, showing a diagnostic logic: blockage → vāta aggravation → acute suffering.
It does not describe the soul’s after-death route; rather, it explains how embodied life is constrained by “paths/channels,” a motif that elsewhere supports the Purāṇic contrast between bodily limitation and the jīva’s subtle continuity.
If there is painful blockage with a hot, touchable swelling, treat it as urgent; seek qualified medical evaluation and avoid self-treatment that may worsen inflammation or vāta.
