śaṅkaraścaiva sarvaśca kṣāntidaḥ kṣāntikṛnnaraḥ (511) / bhaktapriyastatā bhartā bhaktimān bhaktivardhanaḥ
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Concept: The Lord is both ‘Śaṅkara’ and ‘All’; He grants kṣamā (forgiveness) and cultivates forgiveness in humans; devotion is reciprocally nourished by Him.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara as antaryāmin who transforms the heart (citta-śuddhi) through grace; harmony of names/forms pointing to one Supreme.
Application: Adopt forgiveness as a devotional practice; pray for the capacity to forgive; see the Lord as protector in adversity and as the inner source of bhakti.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.15 (bhakti-oriented nāma sequence: bhakta-priya, bhakti-vardhana)
This verse presents the Divine as both the giver of forgiveness and the one who cultivates forgiveness in people, implying that kṣānti is a core virtue supported by devotion and divine grace.
By emphasizing devotion and inner virtues like forgiveness, the verse points to bhakti-based purification—an inner preparation that supports the soul’s auspicious progress beyond death.
Practice forgiveness and devotional remembrance: cultivate patience in conflicts, and strengthen bhakti through regular prayer/recitation, seeing devotion as a force that transforms character.
