Vali’s Pursuit of Mayavi and the Cave Episode
ततोऽहं तैस्समागम्य सम्मतैरभिषेचितः।राज्यं प्रशासतस्तस्य न्यायतो मम राघव4.9.21।।आजगाम रिपुं हत्वा वाली तमसुरोत्तमम्।।
tato 'haṃ taiḥ samāgamya sammatair abhiṣecitaḥ | rājyaṃ praśāsatas tasya nyāyato mama rāghava || 4.9.21 ||
ājagāma ripuṃ hatvā vālī tam asurottamam ||
Then, when they had assembled, those ministers—by common consent—consecrated me. While I was ruling the kingdom in accordance with law, O Rāghava, Vāli returned after killing that foremost of demons, the enemy.
Legitimate rule should rest on consent and justice: consecration by ministers and governance 'nyāyataḥ' underline dharmic kingship.
Sugrīva is installed as ruler; during his lawful reign, Vāli unexpectedly returns victorious.
Commitment to orderly governance—Sugrīva presents his rule as aligned with justice rather than mere power.
